Your contribution
to Hemoglobal can help make the difference between life
and death for a child with thalassemia. No amount is too
small in the fight against thalassemia. Below are some of
the ways you can help to save the life of a child in Sri
Lanka.
CDN $100 buys: Contributions toward medical
supplies, including infusion pumps and blood testing equipment,
and tests of heart and liver function which are currently
not monitored in all patients, placing them at risk.
CDN $350 buys: One infusion pump for delivery of life saving
medicine, which removes excess iron from the bodies of transfused
children.
CDN $1,000 buys: One year of support, including salary,
for a counsellor or social worker in a clinic to assist
in the care, management and counselling of hundreds of local
families.
CDN $2,500 buys: A hemoglobinometer, a
machine which measures blood levels (in the few clinics
where these have been purchased, efficient and accurate
blood testing saves families thousands of hospital days
per year).
CDN $5,000 buys: Five years of treatment (to remove the
iron accumulated through transfusions) for a child with
thalassemia under the age of five years.*
CDN $10,000 buys: Five years of treatment for a child with
thalassemia over the age of five years.*
*The key to survival in thalassemia
is prevention of the iron overload that is acquired through
transfusions. Although the government is doing what it can,
often the resources to buy life-saving medicine are not
enough to meet the full needs of all children. Some families
can purchase extra medicine, but most cannot. Hemoglobal
has found that some families with two children affected
by thalassemia have already lost their older child due to
the shortage of medicine. Some donors may want to supply
these families with an assured regular supplement to their
supply of medicine, to ensure that the second child in these
families, and others in need, are not lost.
